Islamic bioethics of seeking treatment and end of life care

End-of-life medical decision making presents a major challenge to patients and clinicians. Presenters will discuss a theologically rooted rubric for helping muslim patients in setting goals of care and making better medical decisions. He will discuss the Islamic perspective on seeking medical treatment, and use the theological concept of accountability before God (taklıf) to provide a framework for quality-of-life assessment.

Prof. Aasim Padela

Prof.  Aasim I. Padela is Professor with Tenure of Emergency Medicine, Bioethics and the Medical Humanities at the Medical College of Wisconsin, USA. He holds teaching and research appointments in the Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities within the Institute for Health and Equity, at the Center for Advancing Population Science, and in the Cancer Center. He is also a classically trained scholar is Islam. Dr. Padela’s scholarship aims at improving health and healthcare through better accommodating religious values in healthcare delivery. His research span behaviours related to cancer screening, organ donation, end-of-life care, and the intersection of religion and science.

Dr Amir Zayegh

Amir is a Neonatal Consultant working at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne. He studied Medicine at the University of Melbourne, and has completed a Masters of Practical Ethics at Oxford University and a Fiqh of Medicine course with Al Balagh Academy in the UK. His interests include Bioethics and Islamic Ethics, and point of care ultrasound. He is passionate about developing spiritually uplifting peer support and education opportunities, and tocontribute to improving the health literacy and outcomes of the Muslim and wider Australian community

Dr. Muntaser Musameh

Dr. Muntaser Musameh is a Palestinian Australian Interventional Cardiologist based in Canberra, with expertise in clinical research, medical education, and academia. A PhD graduate from University College London, he was among the first 21 doctors to train in Palestine. He currently serves as Vice President of PANZMA (Palestinian Australian New Zealand Medical Association).

Dr. Omer Shareef

Dr. Omer Shareef is a Neuropsychiatrist at Townsville University Hospital and a Senior Lecturer at James Cook University. With specialist training from the UK, he focuses on brain injuries and their psychiatric, neurocognitive, and behavioral impacts. He is developing a community-led brain injury service to enhance brain health education and reduce caregiver burnout. Dr. Shareef is also passionate about faith-health wellbeing from a neuroscience perspective and serves as a board member of the Tropical Brain and Mind Foundation and Vice President of AIMA.

A/Prof. Rakime Elmir

Rakime Elmir is an Associate Professor in nursing and midwifery at Western Sydney University. She is a nurse, midwife and academic with over 20 years’ experience. Her research interests are in traumatic birth, parents transition to parenthood and the psychological and emotional impact. Rakime’s other interests are in cultural safety and culturally responsive health care. She co-created the first national branded Hijab to form part of clinical uniform at Western Sydney University. She regularly facilitates cultural safety workshops to clinicians. Her work has been recognised by the Vice Chancellor and she was the recipient of the Mission of Hope Professional of the year.

Dr. Marrwah Ahmadzai

Marrwah is an obstetrics and gynaecology registrar. She is also an advocate for anti-racist medicine, women’s health and health leadership. Her writing has appeared in the SBS, Guardian and the ABC and she is a speaker who has made appearances on the national and international stage including a TEDx talk on the power of storytelling in breaking down barriers.

Dr Naba Masad Alfayadh

Naba is a General Practice Registrar, social entrepreneur, whose impactful work has benefited people worldwide. She is pioneering efforts to reshape global health access, advocating for multicultural communities in Australia and beyond. As the founder of Happy Brain Education and Rahma Health, Naba’s initiatives have transformed the lives of many, from newly arrived refugees to Arabic-speaking families. With a distinguished background in medicine, sociology, and social entrepreneurship, Naba has earned numerous awards, including recognition as one of Australia’s Most Influential Young Leaders.

Dr Noor Suhana Mohd

Dr Noor Suhana Mohd Graduated with MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from The Adelaide University and obtained her Fellowship of Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) in 2019. She is a GP Supervisor for RACGP and also holds the title of Associate Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Adelaide University.

Dr Muhammad Afzal Kahloon

Dr Muhammad Afzal Kahloon is the founding president of the Australian Islamic Medical Association (AIMA) and a Canberra-based urologist with a special interest in laparoscopic and robotic oncological surgery. He also currently serves as the national President of AIMA. 

A former member of the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa, Dr Kahloon has a longstanding commitment to medical outreach and charity work. He has volunteered under the banners of the Islamic Medical Association of Queensland, the Pakistan Medical Association, and the Federation of Islamic Medical Associations, contributing to initiatives across Africa and the Subcontinent. His humanitarian efforts include participation in vesico-vaginal fistula repair camps in Tanzania and multiple urological surgical camps in Pakistan and Kashmir.

Prof. Omar Farouque

Professor Omar Farouque is a renowned cardiologist and Director of Cardiology at Austin Hospital, Heidelberg. He specializes in interventional cardiology and is a Clinical Professor at the University of Melbourne, with over 180 research publications. Inspired by his father’s heart condition, he is dedicated to patient-focused care. Trained in Australia and the US, he holds a PhD from Monash University and completed advanced training at Stanford University.

 

A/Prof. Ahmad Aly

Mr. Ahmad Aly is a General and Specialist Upper GI Surgeon, trained at Austin Hospital, Melbourne, with fellowships in Adelaide and the U.K. He leads Upper GI Surgery at Austin Hospital, is a senior lecturer at Melbourne University, and serves on the boards of ANZGOSA and OSSANZ. With extensive international publications and conference presentations, he specializes in bariatric surgery and has held leadership roles in ANZMOSS and IFSO-APC.

Dr Sara Baqar

Dr. Baqar, born in Alice Springs, studied medicine at Monash University and trained at Austin Health. A finalist for the RACP President’s Award (2009), she has presented internationally and published 18 journal articles and a guideline on diabetes management during Ramadan. Passionate about teaching, she is a Clinical Skills Coach at the University of Melbourne and a supervisor for RACP trainees.

Dr Abdul Rahman Ihdayhid

Dr Abdul Rahman Ihdayhid is a Cardiologist specialising in coronary and structural intervention, including cardiac CT. He is a Consultant Cardiologist at Fiona Stanley Hospital and holds an academic appointment at Curtin University. Dr Ihdayhid completed an interventional cardiology fellowship at MonashHeart, Melbourne, and earned a PhD in coronary physiology and cardiac CT from Monash University. His research focuses on coronary physiology, cardiac imaging, and structural heart disease. In addition to his academic work, Dr Ihdayhid has experience in research commercialisation in the field of artificial intelligence and biomedical engineering. He serves as a director and clinical advisor to med-tech companies, contributing to industry partnerships and innovations in cardiovascular technology.

Dr. Mueed Mian completed his medical degree at the University of Melbourne and underwent his training in rheumatology and general medicine at Austin Hospital, Northern Hospital and The Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Dr. Mian is co-founder and director of Epping Specialist Group. He is passionate about teaching and is also director of physician education at the Central NorthWest Consortium at Northern Hospital. He currently holds public positions at Northern Hospital as consultant rheumatologist and general physician. He has previously been a tutor for the University of Melbourne medical school and has also held an advisory role for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)., who deliver cataract clinics in Africa, build and maintain orphanages and build foundational skills.

 

Dr Naj Soomro

Dr Naj Soomro is a Sports Doctor and a General Practitioner with 15 years of experience in clinical medicine. He is currently employed as the Chief Medical Officer for The Pacific Games Council and Head Doctor for Port Melbourne FC. He holds a PhD in Sports and Exercise Science from the University of Sydney, focusing on cricket injury prevention. He has covered 3 Cricket World Cups and 1 FIFA World Cup as a Team Doctor

In addition he performs cardiac cardiac device insertions including pacemakers and defibrillators. Uwais has been a leader and mentor for many cardiologists in his field. He is actively involved in research, and is passionate about new technologies and education. His excellent communicative skills enable him to engage with an audience and simplify the complex arrhythmia world !
